Junior Programs

The CIDBFS believes that all kids should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of sport, and that no child or youth should be left out. Our non-profit Club provides supported programs to children and youth in order to remove the financial barriers that prevent them from participating in an activity that could be the beginning of a life-long love of sport.

School Program Overview

There are four different programs available to schools:

a. One time, on-water paddling experience

b. Standard Youth Team Program

c. Supported Youth Team Program

All options include instruction, coaching, and the use of all equipment (boats, paddles, personal floatation devices (pfd)).

a) One Time On-Water Experience This program is for all ages of school children and their teachers who just want a fun and rewarding experience on the water. Kids come for a half day of activities that start with basic paddling and ends with fun races.

b) Standard Youth team program: This program is for high school students who have already formed their team, and have their coaches and their sponsors, and do not need any further development help from the Club. This program participates in the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival, held annually in June and the Dragon Zone Junior Regatta in May.

c) Supported Youth program: This program is for high school age students who wish to organize a team but do not have an adult sponsor or coach. The Club arranges for two trained adults to assist each team with instruction and coaching, as well as guide them towards self-management, teaching them important life skills such as peer communication, responsibility and organizational skills. Participation in the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Races is free of charge to these Junior teams. Presently, there is a small charge for some of the other activities but the Club endeavours to keep all student costs at less than $50 each for a season of paddling including instruction, use of equipment, race and regatta registrations and safety and sport equipment. 2012 price for Supported Youth Program is $1300.00 plus HST.
