The Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. We have stories about our history, our contribution to the community, dragon boating through the centuries and our teams – some come for the fun, some for the competition, some for their cause.
This year we will hold the traditional Blessing Ceremony at 5 pm on Friday, June 21st at the dock near Creekside Community Centre. Come and see Taoist priests “awaken the dragons” from their winter nap. Invited guests will “dot the eyes” of the dragons as part of this colourful ritual. Great photos to be had!
Over 200 teams have registered in 2013. Looking forward to these teams returning:
False Creek Grandragons - team members range in age from their 50s to their 80s and this year they will dig deep to retain the Seniors’ Cup!
Conquering Waves – by conquering waves, they hope to conquer the stigma of mental illness.
Eric Hamber FCRCC Eternal Dragons – they live up to their name – at 24 years, they are the longest-standing junior team in North America. They train five days a week and have Big Plans!
Every team tells a story – and they’re happy to tell it to you.
We think our volunteers are great too. Many have been with us for years – and won’t go home even when their shifts are over! Click on the left menu for some engaging volunteer stories over the years. Call or email me if you’d like to profile a volunteer.
