Winning poster exemplifies spirit of 2018 Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival

Twenty-two talented artists submitted designs in the competition to design a poster for the 2018 Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival, marking its 30th anniversary this year as Vancouver’s premiere outdoor summer celebration of sport, music, art, and culture.

A judging panel, made up of representatives from Concord Pacific and Dragon Boat BC, narrowed down the selections to their top three. Lauren Carr’s line art, an electronic illustration by Ashlea Spitz, and a painting by John Ferrie were chosen as the three semi-finalists.

Dragon Boat BC General Manager Ann Phelps reveals, “We are thrilled with the calibre of visual artists who submitted their work to be considered for this years’ Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival.  It was extremely difficult narrowing it down to the three finalists, never mind the winner, but we are very pleased to finally decide on the work of artist Ashlea Spitz.”

Dragon Boat BC’s Facebook followers also weighed in on their favourite with each vote entered in a draw for a Festival Fan Package, including t-shirts, hats, and complimentary food and beverage during the festival, June 22-24. Karyll Magtibay won the draw prize.

Colourful electronic illustration takes home $1,500 prize

Chosen as the judges’ and fan favourite, Ashlea’s design highlights a carved dragon head in the bow as paddlers and a drummer race in False Creek with the iconic dome of Science World shining in the background.

Ann applauds Ashlea’s artistic vision. “Her design is animated, fun, and reflective of dragon boating traditions, combined with Vancouver’s uniquely West Coast setting.”

Ashlea takes home $1,500 in prize money and her design will be displayed on 2018 Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival posters, advertising, and promotional materials.
