Steveston Dragon Boat Festival returns this Saturday for first time since 2019, more than 70 teams face off on Fraser River

RICHMOND, B.C. (August 18, 2022)  — Back for the first time in three years, Dragon Boat BC will host the Steveston Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, August 20, from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Imperial Landing in Richmond, B.C.

Featuring dragon boat races, live music, entertainment, and more, the outdoor event is free to the public. The 2022 festival — which is one of B.C.’s biggest dragon boat races — will spotlight 72 teams and about 2,000 paddlers on the Richmond-area waters.

Preliminary heat races begin at 9 a.m., while the festival marketplace opens at 10 a.m. The finals are held at 2:30 p.m., with a medal ceremony at 3 p.m. The entire festival site in Steveston closes at 7:30 p.m.

Festival displays include a boat featuring artwork designed by Musqueam artist Debra Sparrow — created as part of a Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival Society initiative to commission 9 local artists to create unique artwork commemorating the landmark arrival of 18 new racing dragon boats. As well, the Expo 86 Original Teak dragon boat — with the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office — will be displayed.
